| Based on the bestseller novel by James Jones, screenwriter Daniel Taradash and director Fred Zinnemann (both of whom won Oscars for their work) provided a powerful, involving look at the lives and loves of military men, and their women, shortly before the Pearl Harbor attack. Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed won Oscars. Montgomery Clift is also superb. A love scene between Burt Lancaster, a tough-but-fair sergeant, and Deborah Kerr, a bored wife of a commander, with the two of them embracing on the beach, as the surf crashes in is legendary. | |
