In recent years, Japanese pop culture (manga, anime, pop music) has gained notoriety in the United States. It has influenced Hollywood films, music videos and the work of many contemporary artist. Designed as an historical survey of Japanese pop culture, this course will view recent examples of successful productions such as AKIRA, Dragon Ball Z and Spirited Away, and discuss how these works speak to contemporary American sensibilities. We will also consider noteworthy and influential works of the past (Godzilla, Astro Boy and other sci-fi, ninja and karate productions) and how they reflect changes in post 1945 Japanese society. |
